LEGO Gaga

LEGO Gaga

I have collaborated with amazing artists over the years: Jim Lee, Dean West, and you could even count Jonathan Coulton. So it was fun when Lady Gaga approached me about collaborating on her next music video.

Gaga’s latest album, ARTPOP, has a lot to do with her life of being caught between both the world of art and the world of pop culture. This resonated with me since I am often creating pop culture references out of a child’s toy and presenting it as art.

One of the main themes we discussed was about making art accessible. And one of the main reasons I use LEGO bricks is to make the art accessible. So it felt like a natural fit to include my artwork in her new video.

It was fun to have Gaga in my art studio brainstorming ideas. Once we settled on a few core concepts I went ahead and started working on the pieces. You may note that there is more than just the Yellow sculpture in the G.U.Y. video. (Can you find them?)

We then traveled to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA for the shooting. It was a beautiful setting and quite the production. Really have to hand it to the Haus of Gaga for putting together such an amazing group of people.

If you are curious, no, it’s not the original “Yellow” in the video. I constructed a new headless version just for Gaga. She truly embodies ARTPOP!

I am pleased to be announcing a project that has been very close to my heart and a big driving force for me as an individual and artist – the formation of a nonprofit giving organization called the Art Revolution Foundation.

Art Revolution’s mission is to raise awareness and funds to put art supplies in kids’ hands, to fund programs that put arts education back into America’s schools and to support organizations that conduct art therapy for the ill and elderly. Its key message, “art is not optional,” is driven by the alarming devaluation of the arts in today’s schools and communities. With so many educational institutions cutting back on arts-related programs due to budgets and state mandates, children are not getting the creative inspiration, drive and knowledge that art education offers. Art Revolution drives to change that.

Art Revolution will start its giving program by partnering with my friend Sal Masekela’s Art of Craft project celebrating artisans and their crafts through unique, limited-edition t-shirts collections. “The Art of the Brick” designs include nine t-shirts featuring artwork with 10% of the proceeds going to the Art Revolution Foundation. “The Art of the Brick” t-shirts are available at artofcraft.com and select Fred Segal locations from Jan 8th – Feb. 19th.

Share our mission and the community of change through Art Revolution’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest

It was also fun to stumble upon The Art of the Brick poster at the world’s most famous French fry stand at Friterie Maison Antoine. In case you were wondering…the fries were delicious!

I am honored to announce that The Art of the Brick will be coming to the heart of New York City at the Discovery Times Square (226 West 44th Street). This will be my largest showing of artwork to date, in fact, it will be the largest solo display of LEGO® art ever assembled. Since New York is my hometown, I have some very exciting surprises in store and have created several brand-new, never-been-seen pieces for this exhibition.

The exhibition opens on June 14th, 2013 and will be on display until January 5th, 2014. Tickets are available and can be purchased in advance here.

Can’t wait to see you all there!
