Capcom’s Lost Planet Launch Event

Kids have a fascination with robots. I don’t know what it is, but I remember many times building robots out of LEGO bricks when was a little kid. And LEGO lends itself to robots. LEGO is made up of little rectangles and what better way to make a robot than with a big rectangle head on a big rectangle body.

The funny thing is, when you are a kid and you are playing with LEGO robots, they all tend to do one thing: attack. Sometimes they attack the LEGO city. Sometimes they attack other LEGO robots. And sometimes they attack your sister’s Barbie caravan. But they always seem to attack something. You never see a kid building a robot to help with the vacuuming.

So when Capcom recently launched its new “Lost Planet” game for the Xbox 360, I was excited when they asked me to build a gigantic robot for their launch event in San Francisco. The thing was, this was no rectangle robot. Oh, no. No, they wanted a large VS Robot Suit. Now, if you haven’t played the game, the VS Robot is a big ol’ mecha type thing that’s all round. Round head. Round arms. Round legs. That, and it has a huge jetpack. And rocket booster stuff. And some gun things. As you can see, I’m a real mecha expert. But I knew one thing: this robot was not made for vacuuming.

Fortunately, I had some experience building round things. I once had built a large Al Roker. After many hours (read: days) I was able to create something that looked like a robot. It even had a light that lit up and shot lasers. This was true except for the lasers. And the part about building Al Roker.

The VS Robot got a great reaction at the event. I guess even adults like a big ol’ robot that looks like it is ready to attack. Especially adults who attend a video game launch event.
